Ariela Jacobs / Missing You
A few months ago when I started this project, Ariela Jacobs was one of the first artists I came across that stopped me dead in my tracks. When I first heard her last single Trees, I was struck by the fact that I immediately knew that I was listening to someone who not only was born to be in music, but who breathed and lived it. That feeling has not changed after hearing Missing You. In fact it may have actually intensified. I have no idea who she’s singing about, but you believe every emotion and note.
Missing You is a track that at times is almost ethereal. It leaves you weak at moments without overly complicating the song. It drifts in and out of emotions effortlessly. Complimenting this is the Ariela Jacobs voice, a perfect pop blend of haunting sweetness. There’s a vulnerability in both tone and delivery that is comforting in its yearning. The tempo helps keep the track in a wonderful warm daydream essence that builds a romanticism without ever becoming insincere. And then you get to the last quarter of the song and Jacobs pulls the rug out from under you, drops all instruments, and leaves only the stark clarity of her voice for a full verse before building the momentum once again. It’s in that acapella instant that you begin to understand the true effect of her voice. Even in the heartbreak, she makes you want to fall in love.
Ariela Jacobs’ Missing You is an absolute gem that fits perfectly into today’s world of radio friendly singer songwriters and would give any of her contemporaries a run for their money. It would feel very much at home on pop and AC radio and still find love from the folk music community. If Australia hasn’t caught on to Ariela Jacobs yet, it’s time they took notice. Because the rest of the world is definitely paying attention.
Missing You will be released Friday, February 1st, 2019 on all platforms.
