When I happened upon Caskets, the solo project of Charlatan guitarist Austin Blaine Heath, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I mean, could there really be an actual queer alt-rock-pop-punk lead out there that is creating that Emo infectious thrash life I love? Was it possible? And then I clicked play on the new single ‘Heart Attack’ and the clouds parted, and the sun was shining and my heart absolutely leapt.
With moments that remind you of Yellowcard, the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Taking Back Sunday and even Paramore and Blink 182, Caskets has delivered a truly stellar entry into the genre. This is a song that can be easily found on Sirius Alt-Nation, loved by Madison, Regan and Justin Cade, sat firmly on the Alt 18, and deserving of a spot on the Advanced Placement tour (I may indeed be a slight Alt Nation fan).
Austin Heath has taken a huge step for queer artists in this genre. Like those before him, it’s a cold and isolated place to step into a world where you may be one of the few. But for fans of this musical world, we are waiting with open arms.
From the Caskets Facebook page, Heath expresses the project as “Music for the down, lost, and loveless” and explains...
"I started writing the first Caskets' songs during one of the darkest points in my life. I had lost my job, was depressed, was closeted and terrified of coming out, and had suffered my first real heartbreak. I was lost in life, and decided to chronicle my heartache and adventure out of the dark with this music. This project is all about holding yourself personally responsible for putting your life in order, finding meaning and a purpose in your existance, and discovering the strength in yourself to be brave and face down the demons that lie in ourselves and in what we fear most.”
A familiar sentiment so many of us can relate to. “Heart Attack” is the second single from the project. And we want more! So Austin Blaine Heath, we are waiting patiently for more of this gorgeous alt-punk goodness you have bestowed upon us. So play on good piper. Bring us that Emo lifeblood you know so well.
