Q Review Staff You scour the internet for new music and you eventually hit a gold mine. There’s SO much to say about ‘Uncomfortable’ the latest single from Manchester band Elephant Trees. First let me say that queer alt-rock is alive, kicking, taking names, throwing a party, regretting said party, throwing a party do-over and then not giving a shit about what anyone thinks of their party, unapologetic and big time “well” with Elephant Trees. All that to say, queer alt-rock is doin’ just fine. In fact, it’s spectacular. ‘Uncomfortable’ is a whole lot of everything and so much of what we all think and want to say. But rather than hide it all, Elephant Trees have essentially poured it out for us in gobs and said “find your footing” while we slip and slide around in our own struggle with subject matter. The song tackles a gamut of discomfort, most notably in the realm of mental health, not shying away or dancing around the subject but rather serving a firm high flying kick to its jugular. It’s a big bad ass take back of power served up with a sporadic satin bow of flurry. The music brings back moments of the glory days of 90’s indie alternative mashed with sounds of progressive pop, and a sweet shock of some recent Two Door Cinema Club vibes. This mixed with some honest and true lyrics and messaging make ‘Uncomfortable’ a believable slice of a youth rallying cry for woken awareness and self empowerment. Sat on this course, Elephant Trees have a very bright outlook! We dig it and are braced and ready for the next wave of discomfort.
