The more I listen to Fletcher’s ‘Undrunk’ the more I fall in love with the song. This review may be viewed as making a very bold statement, but stay with me. Fletcher is one of the most exciting artists currently emerging into mainstream muscic. She could very well be considered to be the young queer woman’s “Julia Michaels” or “Carrie Underwood”. What I mean by that is, the love songs and pop creations that many young straight women gravitate towards and relate to are from artists similar to Michaels and Underwood, artists delivering strong melodies and well crafted pop ballads that the audience connects with. They can see themselves in the song because the artists sing about relationships that they identify with.
What Fletcher presents is that same equally strong brand and style of music but directly accessible for young queer women. ‘Undrunk’ is a song that isn’t left open to interpretation. It’s provocative in language, fiercely direct in attack, and yet still manages to stay true to a strong pop production. Fletcher doesn’t dance around the subject of complicated emotions during breakups. The object of her regret remains the only real purposefully ambiguous piece of the puzzle. Purposefully because as she’s stated in interviews she does not believe that anyone should have to label their sexuality for the world and she herself identifies outside the world of labels.
As a song, 'Undrunk' has all the classic components for popular success. You can imagine hearing ‘Undrunk’ on every hit radio station, on every weekend countdown. It sits perfectly into that world of radio friendly melody and delivery. It’s that familiar story of young love, when you’re hurting and you just wish you could undo it all and not have to feel everything, not think about the person or live with the regrets. It’s relatable as an experience but Fletcher provides access to a larger and more diverse audience. 2019 looks to be a big, bold year for Fetcher. And it's only a matter of time before Fletcher is the name on everyone's best of lists.
