Great Scott!
J. Scott Returns with Triumphant EP 'Adoration'
Welcome back J. Scott!
It's been nearly 2 years since J.Scott last released new music. And although 2020 has gotten off to a less than spectacular start, J.Scott isn't letting things stop his return. And what a stellar return it is! Hot on the heels of brand new single 'Edibles' comes the brand new EP "Adoration", a 4 song R'nB celebration of slow jams, throwback vibes and forward thinking funk and soul. Time away has done nothing but bring us an EP we all need. Summer just got a whole lot hotter! Making now the perfect time to reintroduce J.Scott. So we decided to have a chat!
Hey J.! Firstly, for those who aren't familiar with your music, how did you get started?
Hey hey love! I’ve been singing since out of the womb to be honest. But I really got my first start training classically from High School to College.
Which music artists influenced you growing up?
Too many to be honest but, Brandy, Solange, Prince and Kelis.
To my ear you tend to play around in multiple genres, but how would you describe your particular style of music?
Haha. It is a bit… eccentric. Being black and queer code switching becomes second nature which goes into genre fluidity for me. If I had to tag a name on it I’d say Retro Futurism.
You've been away from releasing music for almost 2 years. What have you been up to during your hiatus?
Training. Writing. Getting my head on tact for World Scottie Domination.
What's the biggest thing you learned during the time away?
That my voice is bigger than I think and that trusting your spirit is the move.

You've come back with the single 'Edibles' and now the EP "adoration". What are you saying with this EP? What is it about for you?
This EP represents the inner renaissance I've had within myself. As a black, queer man from the south navigating in this time, I just needed to fall in love with myself again. Making this project allowed me to say "okay, bitch I'm here, I can do this."
"Adoration" explores the multifaceted experiences of black queer romance. When I first started this record, I had no clue what it would sound like sonically, but I knew I wanted to tell a story through each song. In my world, you meet someone at a club, do drugs, have sex and then you wake up and wondering if you fell in lust or love. This EP is love, sex, and more love.
There are a lot of classic 90's R'nB vibes on the EP. Is that a particular time in music you connect with?
Um YAS! It’s my childhood. It’s my blood.
Have you been listening to or following many other LGBT artists and if so who has caught your ear/attention?
I’m super into Kehlani, Bronze Avery, MNEK and Iniko (an AMAZING talent and a close friend)! So Fuck YES! I’ve been listening haha.
When creating your own music, where do you draw inspiration from?
My life is in always in my music. Whether it be something I’ve experienced or friends of mine. As an empath it’s easy to pick up on their energy.
As a singer/songwriter, what's your approach and process to writing and creating music?
I like to live a carefree life. We won’t be here forever, so I don’t take much serious which is my approach to music. I’m the one to walk in the studio and say let’s write a song called “Bitch Stole My Porkchops”. For me it’s all about freedom.

Who has been the biggest supporter in your life?
GOD & My Mum. Period.
Music can be a very stressful life. How do you keep yourself motivated and how do you practice self care?
Very stressful! Every morning I wake up, pray, workout, journal and then meditate. I don’t look at my phone until those things are done. I’ve been leading with this routine since March!
Who would your dream music collaboration be with? Either writing or performing with.
Myself, Janelle Monae, Lizzo & KAYTRANADA. Nothing but black magic!
What’s next after the EP? What does the next 2 years look like?
More music! No more breaks until I’m on my Rihanna status. We have more singles dropping for the rest of this year.
The next two years is giving festivals, tours and touching the lives of people one ear at a time.
What’s the motto that you live by?
I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me. (I know it’s a beauty queen response but it’s the truth and I’m a beauty queen).
What’s something on your music career “bucket” list?
Performing at the Royal Albert Hall

Ok, tough questions are over. Let's have some fun!
If you could go anywhere in the world right now where would you go?
Back home to Jacksonville, FL. No other place can do it for me right now. Haha.
What are the five things you can’t live without?
GOD.
Music.
My diffuser.
Edibles.
Water.
What’s your advice to the young artists out there looking to start releasing their own music?
You’re your biggest critic, worst enemy, and your biggest fan. Literally, just doing it how NIKE says is the TEA.
What are you most excited about for the future?
Truly living in my divinity and having a prosperous career as a musician.
What do you get up to when you're not making music?
Practicing, Stalking boys on Instagram, Working out, and being the best brother, friend, and son I can be.
Desert Island Discs: What are the 5 albums you have to have with you if stranded on a deserted island?
F***! This is so hard!
Brandy – Full Moon
Mariah Carey – Butterfly
Toni Braxton – Self Titled
Prince – Emancipation
Kelis – Wanderland
Honorable Mention(s):
Blackout by Britney Spears
In A Perfect World by Keri Hilson
Rated R by Rihanna
Stripped by Xtina
Super power of choice?
I’m going to make one up and say staying the size I am now. Working out sucks sometimes. Haha.
You walk into a room. What song is your personal soundtrack?
Oh, it’s easily “Bossy” by Kelis or “Take Your Man” by City Girls, period. I would listen to “Bossy” every morning in middle school to make me feel invincible and rich. Haha.
Who is your Celebrity Crush?
Steve Lacy and Normani.
What’s one last thing you want readers to know about you?
Well, I’m a single and emotionally available scorpio living in NYC. Haha. But seriously, I would want readers to know that I’m a go-getter from Jacksonville, FL that keeps a positive mindset. I’ve been through a lot just like they have. I’ve seen setbacks, I’ve taken the wrong turns and I’ve almost died (one too many times), but it’s never stopped me from loving life and chasing every single dream I have for myself.
Once the girls see the biopic, they’ll see why my middle name should be RESILIENCE.
