I’ve long been an admirer of Jake Wesley Rogers’ music, vocal tone and quirky style. He’s truly a unique artist. His time on America’s Got Talent exposed a glimmer of the kind of artist he might grow into.
However the release of his EP “Evergreen” and especially its title track reveals the artist that he’s become. And it’s a reveal that is very much welcome. Rogers is a pop song writer. He writes in the fringes of darkness with elements of sadness and many sparks of realism. There’s an old soul definitely submerged within his youthful creativity. And it’s a successful combination as “Evergreen” the EP and song are captivating and mysterious with bright moments of eager exhilaration.
There is an obvious comparison that can be drawn between Jake Wesley Rogers and Sam Smith. Vocally both men deliver in a mammoth way. They are today’s crooners with complex emotion to spare. But there is a whimsy in Rogers that adds an exciting spirit to his music, preventing that dark corner he plays in from overpowering the songs and instead you just find yourself being happy to join along in his adventure.
As a standout piece, ‘Evergreen’ is a beautifully delivered example of ignited passion and attraction. It’s the kind of song you can get lost in while daydreaming of that intense electricity you feel whenever you see that certain someone. It’s instinctual and uncontrollable, that feeling and rush throughout your body, keeping you warm, even in the cold of winter.
If you haven’t discovered Jake Wesley Rogers yet, it’s time to do so. “Evergreen” is a brief but bold 4 song EP and is just the start of what will be many more musical adventures to come.
