5 songs may seem like a short length of time, but in those 5 moments epic storytelling can be achieved and a lifetime of experiences can be told. And Jake Wesley Rogers new EP “Spiritual” is first class storytelling from the most personal of places.
“Spiritual” is a guided tour through the journey of growth of Jake Wesley Rogers. The themes of self revelation, awareness, acceptance and owning your personal truth are mixed with elements of biblical reference and imagery, and notes of contemporary blues, jazz and old world country gospel. But truly the star of this EP is the generous honesty in Rogers’ vocals. There’s a wonderful vulnerability the listener is invited to experience as he openly sings about the men and experiences from some of his past relationships. These 5 songs are vignettes that each tell a story connected to who Jake was, his experiences and the encounters that have built him up to become the person and artist he is now.
My favorite song from the EP is ‘Pretender’. It’s touching and sad and real. Many listeners will relate to the emotion that is so subtly unleashed in the song, of seeing someone for what you want to see, thinking that they’re so much more than they are and being so blindly in “love”. It can all seem bigger than us when we’re young. And that feeling sweeps through the song to toss us back to those days of foolish youth. And these are moments Jake unashamedly puts on display to learn from and find familiarity in.
As a whole, ‘Spiritual’ is a career building accomplishment. The writing is beautiful and comes from a bright corner of self awareness that exposes Jake Wesley Rogers for all his wonder, regret, desire and strength. There is no hiding on this record. No fakery or embellishment. It’s a pure fragment of a life explored. Vocally Jake has never sounded better and as a collected piece of work there is much to praise and applaud. This will become for some a groundbreaking touchstone. This will be an EP many young gay men will look back on and say “this was the album where I finally saw myself in music. When I finally saw myself in the world”. And that’s a beautiful thing.
“Spiritual” the incredible new EP from Jake Wesley Rogers will be available on all platforms on April 5. Pre-save now. You’ll be glad you did.
