PREMIERE: Kayla Diamond soars on new song and music video for 'I Should Have Listened to My Friends'
Picture
Montreal’s Kayla Diamond is one of my favorite new artists in Canada. She’s been releasing music the past few years since her 2016 “Beautiful Chaos” debut EP, but is now truly hitting in this moment. And now her brand new song ‘I Should Have Listened to My Friends’ has arrived and we’re finally seeing the work, momentum and stars align for Kayla.

Complete with a sound that is current, and so loved by radio around the world, that’s reminiscent to fellow artists like Alessia Cara, Ashe, Tate McRae, Mxmtoon and Daya, Kayla Diamond is positioning herself as the next Canadian pop break out star ready for the world to discover. That’s why she’s our Release of the Week and is definitely One to Watch!

To truly get a solid understanding of who Kayla Diamond the artist AND person is you only need to read her self penned article for "Green Room Stories" titled The Importance of Pronouns in Music...a topic that is much discussed and advocated on here at Q Review. She perfectly sums up what so much of the music world takes for granted by illustrating how excluded the queer music population can feel.

"I’ve had conversations with many writers, producers, and friends about my new-found usage of pronouns in my music; and someone once asked me, 'Don’t you need to tell the world that you’re gay before you just surprise them in a song?' I was taken aback by the question, as it was not something I ever really considered. While it was a totally harmless and thought provoking question, it felt like they were implying that I needed to ask my audience for permission before writing my truth."

A conversation still as important as it was when she wrote this article and deserving of attention.

Kayla Diamond returned last month (October 2020) with new music, treating fans to, “always been you”, a love song to her wife - the couple tied the knot on October 18. 2020! Now, she shares “i should have listened to my friends,” this time a song about an ex, who her friends weren’t raving about. Teaming up again with acclaimed video director Cazhhmere, the video stars Kayla and her real life pals Ruchie Shainhouse and Rikki Yunger.

Produced by Diamond and Craig McConell, - she discusses her inspiration for the track saying, “My new song is about my last relationship and how my friends all saw some warning signs that this person wasn't for me. They all tried to tell me, but I was always super optimistic. I chose to play dumb and continued dating her. In the end... I guess I should have listened to my friends.”

Diamond’s newest works, written over the past year, and produced in quarantine, still traverse traditional pop song pathways. Instead of adding electronic flourishes and elaborate production, Diamond has stripped down each track to its essential elements, allowing her vulnerability to shine through composition and lyrics.

This, track along with “always been you” are co-produced by Diamond, marking her first time co-producing her own music, and continuing to showcase anher commitment to her craft and her musical growth with each subsequent release. Nowhere else has Diamond grown so exponentially in her artistry than in the business and theoretical side of music. She’s fully invested into crafting her own songs and sound top to bottom, working fastidiously in each medium.

What makes Diamond’s music so compelling is that she’s willing to share her real life with her fans in an authentic and honest way. She has become a strong voice for LGBTQ+ community by sharing her experiences growing up in an Orthodox Jewish community and coming out as queer. Keep watching, there’s much more to come from Kayla Diamond.

Kayla will be performing a free livestream tomorrow (November 14) via The Crescent at 6pm EST! More details here.

'I Should Have Listened to My Friends' is now streaming on all platforms.
