The first great make out song of the year has arrived. For anyone needing clarification I’m not making light of the song. Quite the contrary, the sexiness of ‘Unofficial Lover’ and Kyan Palmer’s handling of his delicate and atmospheric vocals is the driving force of the song. It’s a show stopping heat generating entry into the R’nB music vein. The ‘Unofficial Lover’ heartbreak narrative is a wonderful blend of strong pop sensibilities merged excellently with fresh R’nB elements and moments. And it’s a fire-starter.
The success of these elements working in tandem with one another makes for a very rapturous and emotionally connecting musical experience. Much like a long warm embrace. Again I reference the sexiness of the song, it works on a very seductive level to draw the listener in deeper as the song progresses. Everything is nuanced so that no stylistic pieces or vocals become excessive and create sensationalism within the song. No gimmicks, just great music.
And again I’ll mention the vocals. Kyan Palmer is exceptional here. His alluring tone provides a perfect delivery of rich texture and strength to the song. He has very much made his stamp and presents himself as a new vocal powerhouse in the genre. Even the injection of newcomer and discovery Yung Lamby into the song is tempered perfectly to allow the song to stay the course progressively while still elevating the momentum to the next level. Great handling happening here.
I would recommend you put your headphones on, sit back, get comfy, close your eyes and let yourself drift away. This is a song that deserves your full attention.
