Oh, Loverboy!
Nicolas McCoppin talks upcoming debut album "Loverboy"

Picture
Nicolas McCoppin will be releasing his highly anticipated debut pop album Loverboy on September 25th, alongside the release of a new music video for the single "Heaven". Garnering several accolades with his first few single releases (Hailed by VEVO as “Bound To Be a Hit", #25 worldwide on the “Incoming Pop” playlist, several high profile features), McCoppin is eager to deliver the album fans have been waiting for.

"I feel like this record is me in my truest form. It definitely stays true to my dance-pop sound but with some softer romantic pop moments. I'm so excited for everyone to finally hear it in full!"

In anticipation of the album we knew the fans (and us!) had to know more about what to expect so we posed a few questions to Nicolas and like a true artist he delivered the goods!

What can you tell us about "Loverboy" without spoiling too much.
"Loverboy" is my debut EP. It's been in the works for about two years now. It actually feels really weird talking about it because it's been my big secret forever now haha! I've been teasing the concept since my single "Remember That Night". I fell in love really hard last year. I didn't really know how else to deal with my emotions other than writing and singing. The first song I wrote with the full concept in mind was actually my last single "For Years". I kept writing more and more within the storyline and all of a sudden I had a full world created. I knew I had to do something special with it.

What can you tell us about the creation process?
Once I had the concept in mind, I really got to work with my team around me. I have the most incredible group of producers, songwriters, mixing and mastering engineers that I work with. I owe the most to my executive producer Nick Trapani. I couldn't have done it without him. I remember when I told him the concept idea I had for the project and he was so into it. We started working on production and from the first thing he sent me I knew he totally got what I wanted. I had the time of my life making the record. I actually recorded most of it in my home studio during quarantine! Right as I was about to hit the studios lockdown hit. It was actually more fun recording at home. I got to be even more of a perfectionist than usual haha!

We saw you have a tattoo of the title on you. Tell us about that!
I knew since I came up with the title that I wanted a tattoo of it. I came up with the "Angel" cover concept long before we even planned the shoot. I got the tattoo back in May right before we wrapped up all the vocal sessions for the record. I've never worked on something as special as this before. I knew I had to do something big!

Who or what were some of the inspirations on the record?
It was really important for me to show all the different sides of pop music that I love on this record. I think you'll be able to hear that once it's out! Each song is a slightly different sound that I love. I definitely stayed true to my dance-pop sound. A few of the artists that inspired the sessions were Carly Rae Jepsen, Troye Sivan, Lauv and Dua Lipa (just to make a few).

Tell us about the writing process of the record:
Every song was actually a different writing process. I came up with the title "Loverboy" after having about 2-3 songs done for the record. After that, the rest of the writing sessions were very concept driven. Most of the time we started with production. I would have a sound style that I would really want to create. Then after that we would usually go into lyrics. A few songs started with titles first. "City of Love" for example. I had such a clean vision of what I wanted for that song. It might be the most vulnerable song on the record. I wrote that one with no co-writers. The other tracks all started as what I call concept poems. I usually will get the title from those poems and then put it into song structure.

You said that this record doubles as a love note to New York?
I'm born and raised in New York. The city shaped me not only as a person but as an artist/musician. All of these songs being very big moments in my life, took place in New York. New York brought me a sense of community when I needed it most. I remember when I came out in high school, the city felt like my safe space. It still does. I think I mention the city 6/8 tracks haha! It wouldn't be the same if I didn't.

Do you have a favorite song?
Ahh that's so hard! They're all so different to me it's hard to even compare them. I think my two favorites have to be "Heaven" and "City of Love". "Heaven" is the dance track of my dreams. I've always wanted a song that sounds like this. When I listened to the final master I couldn't believe it was my own song haha! "City of Love", like I mentioned before is just a very special song to me. I talk about growing up in a small town and escaping to the city to find love. I can't wait for everyone to hear all the tracks.

"Loverboy" the debut album from Nicolas McCoppin will be available on September 25, 2020. McCoppin stays true to his signature dance-pop sound and continues to explore the narrative from his previous singles of falling in love for the first time. Preceded by several singles including “Stuck”, “Ur Love”, “Remember That Night”, and “For Years”, Loverboy will be teased one last time with the release of “Heaven” - a new single and music video featured on the album. “Heaven” is a club-ready dance-pop track that sees McCoppin further navigating the fun and flirty side of his music. “Heaven” is set to premiere two days before the album release on September 23, 2020.
