When you spend a lot of time seeking out new music and artists, listening to song after song, you can lose perspective and things can start to blur and sound similar. And then something comes along and cuts through it all to rip you out of your headspace and into a whole new soundscape. And oh my oh my oh my oh my oh my did Openside do that to me.
Wow. This song and band are a breath of fresh air! It’s emo-pop at its best. The energy in ‘Character Flaws’ is infectious, the melodies are exciting, the beat is happy and there’s just the right amount of whimsy peppered through to keep it interesting and not becoming generic.
Added to the hip fun of the song is the message...which in its base form is not actually that fun. But it is honest and direct in a very “hear me” manner. Its about insecurities and the toll they can take on us, how they can leave us filled with those feelings of dread. And no matter how many times people tell you that things will get better, it doesn’t change the fact that you feel like they won’t.
And as if it couldn’t get any more real, we have to mention the larger than life video that accompany’s the song. The suits, the dancing, the colors. It has everything to attempt to make those insecure feelings seem a little less scary. From song to presence to video to short pants, a 110% bang on delivery. This is the band I needed growing up. I am an instant fan and can’t wait to devour their music catalog. Openside just barreled through the front door.
