Sev7en UP!
Artist Sev7en Taylor Drops New Mix Tape and Directions

Picture
Rap artist Sev7en Taylor is back again with a brand new Mix Tape that comes with a whole bunch of exciting surprises. And of course we wanted to get the low down on what this versatile lyrical bombshell was cooking up!

Hey Sev7en, it's great to have you back on the Q Review. Especially when it's because of brand new music.

You have a brand new Mix Tape "Drugsandotheralternatives.mp3". Before we get into the music, tell us about that title. Where did it come from and what's the significance?
This mixtape was inspired by true events, the meaning behind the title is coping mechanisms that we utilize. Such as drugs, alcohol or other substances. Especially when we are dealing with trauma from heartbreak.... life etc. I wanted to create something that represented the space I was in temporarily.

So listening to the Mix Tape, it’s a little Sev7en Taylor 2.0. There are a lot of different places you take us with a whole new world of sound that we haven’t heard from you before. What was your plan going into this collection?
I just wanted to create the sound that I heard in my head. I felt as though I wanted the listener to have an experience as if they were high/drunk. When we are intoxicated we say our sober thoughts.  So everything just came together organically and I’m very proud of this body of work.

There are a number of stand outs on the album. Right from the opening and ‘Depressive Episode’, there’s anything but depression on that track. From the 'Love to Love You' retro beats and the speed of the backing track, everything is elevated. There's a real discos vibe as well. This is a fast song. What influences were you drawing from going into these tracks?
Thank you for that and I just heard different sounds. I also wanted to create different worlds inside the listener’s head. I also sampled things from my childhood;  songs that I couldn’t get out of my head as a kid. The recording studio that I record at Donna Summer used to create work there as well and I definitely wanted to sample her in. So I’m very proud that you can take so much from this project.

My favorite on the Mix Tape is 'Lunch Rush'. The sampling and your play off with Moe Peace is so much fun. How did that collaboration come about and did you write together?
I was listening to a snippet on his Instagram. And I said I wanted to get him on the song and by luck he already was introduced to my catalog of music. So the collaboration was very much organic and fun; I’m happy that everyone enjoys the track as much as I do.

There is a real playfulness throughout the album. You’ve always had something to say. But this time around you have hard hits mixed with an almost sense of cheeky flirtation. Is it safe to say you had a great time making this Mix Tape?
I had an amazing time recording this body of work and you can tell. I’m very much centered in my heart and where I’m going with my music narrative. I think what makes me the most excited is hearing the new music and knowing how important this will be 10 years from now. Sometimes being a rapper you are secluded to only making rap music and I’m an overall artist and I feel like it’s important to experiment and push your music narratives.

You’re really known for your Freestyle but there is a lot more of a strategically crafted and written approach to this album. How much of the Mix Tape was freestyle and how much did you plan out?
I did a little of both. More Freestyling than anything. Most songs didn't even have a second verse and I just created it in that moment. This mixtape is just to hold everyone over for the much bigger project coming later on this year.

So if this is Sev7en Taylor 2.0, what’s next? What are we looking at from the haus of Sev7en for the rest of 2020?
Innovation, inspiration and lots of hard work. Also bodies of work that I strongly stand by and that pushes my creative music narrative. Also music videos as well.

Right now it’s a very stressful time for music in general, but even more so for the independent artists. The emergence of COVID-19 and the Corona Virus has shut down a lot of opportunities for artists. For indie artists, some of those opportunities were potential career builders. How are you approaching keeping yourself and your music out there during a time when live opportunities are being limited?
I’m happy that I created this mini project the time and that I did. But just saying safe, washing hands and just loving ourselves through this epidemic.

What up and comers have you seen or come across recently that have caught your attention?
Meaux Bass, Bammie, Paxsir , Isaiah Burden, Moe Peace, Denny Soloist, Justin Evan Thomas, Azari and Darcy Din Dada and so many more to name. Check them all out.

As a thriving and developing rap artist, what would you say to our young queer artists wanting to get started in music? What's the Sev7en advice?
My advice would be to always stay true to yourself and push your creative narrative. Never allow no to be the last answer you get.
And I will say to myself everything is gonna work out don’t even sweat it.
