Slow Dance was one of the first bands I came across when I started looking deeper into who was making great music within the global LGBTQ music community. From the get go there was something genuinely familiar about what they were doing and I found their music so easy to connect with. As an admittedly huge New Wave and Alt Pop fan the electro beats and whimsy of their music really resonate with me. The more I listened to their first single 'dead' the happier it made me, and the more I realized that what I was getting from this LA duo was nostalgia. The music of the 80's and early 90's, rich in that synth pop charm that Slow Dance is now bringing back with their own brand of pop music. It's a musical blend and reinvention, but also still very new and fresh.
Well now they're back again, this time with single number 2, 'No Promises'. And this time they're not just hitting home runs, they're knocking it far, far, FAR out of the park. 'No Promises' is full of rich, fun melody that is reminiscent of early Georgio Moroder, Yaz and Erasure. Everything I loved about the wonder and bliss of music in my teenage days is captured on the wonderful silver platter that is this song. Slow Dance know who they are as artists and completely get the listener who will quickly gravitate to this sugar coated gem. 'No Promises' is that exuberance and innocence of youthful love, romance and excitement. It's a pop bop for the day, filled with light and carries with it a musical fountain of youth. Adding to the texture of the music is the absolutely pitch perfect vocals. It's like stepping back in time into the best climactic scene of the high school prom when the two star struck characters finally kiss. When romantic comedy filmmakers are looking for musical inspiration for their soundtrack, they need to dial up a little Slow Dance.
If Slow Dance's first single was 'dead', then 'No Promises' is giving us life. And it's a life worth living!
'No Promises' is out on all streaming platforms on Wednesday, March 13.
